"We often think of the intersections in our lives, those that are planned, those that occur by chance. Some encounters we hope for, particularly love, and alas, some meetings never happen despite what we wish. I think of how those intersections have the potential to change us, our character, our circumstances, our hopes. We think about how they add to the unfinished story of our lives"...(Amy Tan, Mei Mei, 2005) Chinese folklore speaks of invisible red threads that connect a newborn child's spirit to all the people who will be important in the child's life. As the child grows, the threads shorten, drawing closer those people who are destined. We anxiously await this special meeting, a life changing intersection which will soon take us to China to bring home our little daughter, Cali Griffin.

Doctors and Police

We crossed another major hurdle today in our adoption process. First, we traveled to Shamian Island, just a fifteen minute drive from our hotel, for Cali's immigration doctors appointment and her Visa picture. It was such a crazy process as the Doctors and nurses shuffled our entire group from room to room checking height, weight, hearing, heart, lungs etc. Cali did great and officially became our daughter.

Next we went to the police station, where we applied for Cali's passport. We spent over an hour in a very beautiful building lobby waiting with lots of adoptive parents from all over the world. In fact, Bob ran into a former co-worker who was adopting two six and a half year old sisters. It was amazing to see and hear about everyone's story and meet all these little girls and boys...it's such a small world!

To cap the day off, we went to Pizza Hut and had some American comfort food. Chinese food is fantastic, but it was really nice to have a familiar taste in our mouth. Cali didn't try the pizza but loved her white rice and banana.
